Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The common question heard when buying a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: should I purchase an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, standing for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, an acronym for ‘digital light processing’ are the two commonplace projector imaging technologies. With so many business brands and different models available, it can be challenging for clients to make a decision between both technologies. The simple fact of the matter is that LCD projectors have far superior image quality and colour accuracy. The following article will explain why DLP projectors struggle with reproducing a comparable rate of image quality.

Visualise a set of blinds in your household on your bedroom window. By a twist of a rod you can make the shutters open or closed, depending on if you want to let light in or not. And this is exactly how an LCD projector operates. Each pixel functions like an individual shutter on a set of blinds to either send light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is created of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the pros like to call them. Each pixel element operates to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the time the projector switches on to when the picture reaches your screen is extremely significant for image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors process white light from the lamp by cutting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which project the coloured light to 3 separate LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels form the elements of the image by turning each pixel on and off. The pixels are then simultaneously processed in a glass prism to form the projector image. Something to realise about LCD projectors is that all three colours are delivered onto your projector screen all at the same time. The way a DLP projector functions is very different and even how an image comes out is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is projected through a spinning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This approach to creating an image requires a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to produce the image elements. The elements of the image are projected in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eyes will then put together each coloured element of the image into the full image. From LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to offer top brightness and great colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at a time, and so resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP developers have placed a white segment into the colour wheel to improve general brightness, but this further degrades colour accuracy.

I see in forums all the time that DLP offers a higher contrast ratio and ergo must be superior. For those unaware, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the projector is capable of. DLP projectors do possess high contrast specifications compared to most LCD projectors. Initially, this can seem to be a benefit, however, in truth, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room when the projector is used. Do not be fooled by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you are trying to see needs moving images, DLP projection technology also creates image imperfections, or ‘artifacts’. The most commonplace artifact that a DLP projector forms with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is to be expected in DLP systems because moving images keep changing between the time red, blue and green colours are pulled up. LCD projectors do not have this disadvantage because all the colours are sent with the others. DLP designers have created 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to answer the colour break up issue, but the cost of these projectors make them almost impossible for the majority of businesses and consumers.

Another differentiation between LCD and DLP is how they balance for the refractive qualities of light. Think back to high school science, and recall when they taught you how different colours of light refract varied amounts when directed through the same lens. The disadvantage with DLP projectors is that they use the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously not the same and refract light at different levels. Usually with a DLP projector, some extra yellow colour will appear above and a superfluous blue will come up below an image containing something as simple as a lone black line. In building LCD projectors can be set to remove these effects on the projected image, as each colour is processed on isolated LCD panels.

The one veritable buy point (excluding price) with deciding on a DLP projector is its smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant with regard to mobility and needs to be traded off against the image plusses of LCD projectors. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch rose to dominance in sea power during the 17th century, the initial yacht was a leisure craft used first by royalty and then by the burghers on the canals as well as the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Yacht racing was incidental, arising as private games. English yachting began with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his reaffirmation to the English throne in 1660, the city of Amsterdam gave him a 20-metre (66-foot) leisure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he then named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, ruled 1685–88), made other yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and back, on a £100 wager. Yachting was found to be popular for the rich and royalty, but after that period the habit did not last.

The first yacht club in the British Isles, the Water Club, was instigated around about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard association, and held great naval panoply and gravity. The closest thing to racing was the “chase,” when the “fleet” pursued an imagined enemy. The club went on, for the large part as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, after merging with other organisations, it became known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was first seen in some stipulated method on the Thames around the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland founded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV rose to sovereignty in 1820, it came to be known as the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded with a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht group had been started at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal sponsorship made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continued site of British yachting. The organisation at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, likewise at the ascension of George IV. All members were required to possess boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing races for high stakes were held, and the club life was splendid. Ultimately Royal Yachting Club boats grew in size to more than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting started with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and continued when the English gained power. Sailing was largely for pleasure and reached its apogee in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which cruised on the Mediterranean Sea and created a standard of luxury and elegance for the later yachts in the area from the late 19th century. The first enduring American yacht organisation, the Detroit Boat Club, was started in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens instigated the New York Yacht Club aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The first sailing yachts took the style of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through to the latter half of the 19th century. The design of sizeable yachts was originally heavily put upon by the victory of America, which was created by George Steers for a syndicate led by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) was named after its success at Cowes in 1851. The first yachts were not designed and built in today’s sense, with only a model used. Not until the latter half of the 19th century did what was labeled naval architecture come into action. Not until the 1920s did the use of the research of aerodynamics do for the design of sails and rigging what such study had previously done for hulls.

Because most of all sailboats had been individually manufactured, there was a need for handicapping boats before the one-design class boats were built. Therefore, a rating rule was created, which ended up in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and edited in 1919. In the present day, one of the most rapidly growing areas in the field of sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are manufactured to the same requirements in length, beam, sail area, and other areas (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing those boats can be held on an even keel with no handicapping at all. A perfect example is the standard International America’s Cup Class taken on for participants in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

For the time that yachting was an activity primarily for the royal and the affluent, money was no object, and the size of boats increased, in both length and weight. The promotion and desire of smaller yachts happened in the second half of the 19th century out of the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A voyage around the world (1895–98) led single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray demonstrated the value of smaller boats. Thereafter in the 20th century, for the larger part after World War II, smaller racing and leisure craft became more popular, down to the dinghy, a popular training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, yachts of less than 3 m were sailed single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
Following the decade 1840–50, during which steam started to emulate sail power in public vessels, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were employed increasingly in leisure boats. Large power yachts were progressed to a high standard, and long-distance travel turned into a favoured pastime of the well off. The earliest power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; these then gave way to yachts powered by the wholly submerged screw or propeller kind of propulsion. Like naval and merchant yachts, auxiliaries with both sail and power were the yacht standard for a number of years. By the second half of the 20th century, many yachts were still auxiliaries, but the large part were exclusively power yachts with gasoline or diesel engines.

In the last decade of the 19th century there was a rise in the design of more sizeable steam yachts. In particular of these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was sailed by a crew of more than 150. The Mayflower, commissioned by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and gave active service during World War II.

As bigger and more reliable internal-combustion engines were developed, many bigger yachts were using them for power. The creation of the diesel engine, with heavy oil for fuel, progressed in World War I. During the decade following that, large power-yacht manufacture grew, climaxing in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. During that period the largest auxiliary yacht built was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The construction of larger power boats declined from 1932, and the fashion thereafter was in preference of smaller, less pricey yachts. Following World War II, many small naval craft were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. By the late 20th century, yachting is a internationally loved competition enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually manning and maintaining their own small recreational craft. Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes are distinguished by the effect they have on the distribution of income and wealth. A proportional tax is the kind of tax that imposes the same relative liability on all taxpayers—i.e., where tax liability and income move in the same proportion. A progressive tax is characterizable by a larger than proportional rise in the tax liability in regard to the increase in income, and a regressive tax is recognised by a less than proportional rise in the comparable burden. Ergo, progressive taxes are thought of as reducing inequity in income distribution, while regressive taxes might have the result of increasing these inequalities.

The taxes that are usually believed to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are declarably progressive, however, might become less so within the upper-income class—particularly if a taxpayer is permitted to reduce his tax base by declaring deductions or by leaving out some income aspects from his taxable income. This difficulty of deciding who bears the tax burden lays essentially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being decided.

In considering the economic purpose of taxation, it is necessary to differentiate between various ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates are those dictated in law; commonly these are marginal rates, but sometimes they are average rates. Marginal income tax rates signify the fraction of incremental income that is demanded by taxation when income grows by one dollar. Hence, if tax onus rises by 45 cents when income grows by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax legislation usually contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that rise as income grows. Heavy analysis of marginal tax rates need to take into account provisions as well as the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) falls by 20 cents for each one-dollar growth in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points higher than nominated in the statutory rates. Since marginal rates signify how after-tax income changes in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the necessary ones for considering incentive effects of taxation. It is even more difficult to know the marginal effective tax rate to apply to income from business and capital, since it may depend on considerations such as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem shows that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nil under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates display the portion of total income that is required in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is in consideration for judging the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate increases with income. Average income tax rates usually grow with income, both because personal allowances are permitted for the taxpayer and dependents and because marginal tax rates are graduated; conversely, preferential treatment of income received for the most part by high-income households might dwarf these effects, producing regressivity, as displayed by average tax rates that lessen as income rises.
